I’m on The ReadME Podcast!

I’m excited to share that I was featured on an episode of The ReadME Podcast by GitHub! This opportunity was an absolute honor, and I couldn’t wait to discuss topics that matter deeply to me—mentorship, open source, and community building.

In this episode, hosted by the wonderful Neha Batra and Martin Woodward, I tackle a listener question: How can someone new to open source find their first mentor? Here’s a sneak peek of what I shared:

1️⃣ Start Small: Contributing to open source can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Begin with smaller projects or issues labeled as “good first issues.”

2️⃣ Engage with Maintainers: Open source maintainers are often mentors in disguise! Asking questions, providing feedback, and tackling small tasks can organically lead to a mentoring relationship.

3️⃣ Leverage Programs: Initiatives like Google Summer of Code, Hacktoberfest, and Linux Foundation programs are incredible platforms to meet mentors and gain hands-on experience.

We also discuss how open source communities thrive when we focus on servant leadership—helping others succeed while growing ourselves. It’s a mindset I’ve carried throughout my career, and I loved the chance to unpack it here.

🎧 What else can you expect in this episode?

• Strategies for simplifying your tech stack (yes, Marie Kondo-style!).

• Inspiring stories from fellow developers like bashbunni and Mike Melanson.

• A little bit of fun chatter about the power of ping pong as an icebreaker! 🏓

💡 Whether you’re a seasoned dev or just starting your open source journey, this episode is packed with actionable advice and heartfelt reflections.
